Trinity House, the charity dedicated to safeguarding shipping and seafarers, built the current 41-metre-high lighthouse at Portland Bill in 1906.  This tower replaced the old high and low lighthouses that had been operating in various forms in the area since the eighteenth century.

In 2015, the Portland Bill Lighthouse Visitor Centre was opened within the buildings at the base of the tower.  The main exhibition at the Centre explores the history of the lighthouse, it’s keepers and the organisation that operates it.  Visitors can also look around the tower itself.

Portland Bill is at the southern end of the Isle of Portland, and the Lighthouse and Visitor Centre are situated right at end of this point.
